[Object]The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of brightness of lighting in room on appetite in elder people. [Methods]We studied 24 elder people in home without cognitive impairment. We investigated subjective appetite changes and physiological alterations using meal pictures under different brightness of lighting (BOL) in room. For subjective study, we used questionnaire and for objective one, we monitored the changes in blood pressure (BP), pulse rate (PR), and autonomic nervous activity (ANA). [Results] There were no statistical significant differences in BP, PR, and ANA between each BOL. However, diastolic BP after the observation of the meal picture was significantly decreased compared with base line value. Concerning about subjective characteristics due to questionnaire, the values of good appetite were significantly higher under 400 and 600 lux than those of under 200 lux. [Conclusion] Our results showed that in elder people higher BOL affects appetite without alterations in physiological parameters, resulting in an increase of appetite and a better environmental setting of room.
