Innovative responses to the world drug problem
Drug trafficking groups are seeking technological innovation to target new audiences, ensuring drugs increasingly reach users and helping boost their billion-dollar businesses. World Drug Report 2026 highlights that digital technology has also transformed the buyer-seller relationship in illicit drug markets, through the use of online avenues such as the dark web and social media. Illicit drug markets have always adapted, and organized crime has consistently exploited gaps in governance and regulation. In response, this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (26 June) highlights how the international community, national and local governments, civil society and the public are working together on innovative solutions to reduce the demand for and supply of illicit drugs and mitigate related threats.
